A due date is 280 days from a woman’s last menstrual period, but only 3% of women deliver on this date, and only 70% within 10 days of it.
- Tracking precise lengths of gestation in 125 pregnancies, researchers found that babies were born with up to 37 days variation (up to 43 weeks) from the 268 day average.
- They found that early characteristics of urine samples collected at conception and implantation correlated with patterns in delivery date.
Interventions such as induction, based on rigid interpretations of a due date should be re-evaluated based on this information alone.
